Damien Hirst loves to combine money and art and has pinpointed a truth in the way art is sold. From a London Times article: “The first time you sell something is when it should cost the most,” he says. “I’ve definitely had the goal to make the primary market more expensive.” He compares a Prada outlet and an Oxfam shop. Why, in the world of shoes, do you pay more for a new pair from Prada, while in the world of art, the big money kicks in only when the shoes get to Oxfam?
His commentary refered to his single artist sale at Sotheby’s in September 2008 when he directly put his new artworks on the auction market rather than selling them through his gallery. The goal being to obtain full benefits himself rather than sharing with his gallery. He was upset by the Van Gogh phenomenon where the artist never got to see the recognition of his art by the public or the supplementary monetary benefits his art would have in the future. This introduces the topic of droit de suite, which when translated from French means “the right to follow” otherwise known as the artist resale rights.
Essentially, it implies the artist is entitled to a percentage (a royalty) of the final sale price as long as they’re living, or if deceased then the royalties going to heirs for 70 years after the death of the artist, or depending on the laws in your country. The buyer of the art is responsible for this payment to the aritst.
It gives artists more rights and control over their work so they’re not completely detached from a creative product once it has been sold the first time around. Not to mention the incentive to keep producing quality art works that can potentially increase in value over time. It makes sense for the artist, who originally created a work of art, to be able to profit from the art’s value as it grows and gains popularity worldwide. It also seems absurd that other artists, notably musicians and writers are fully familiar with getting benefits from resale royalties- so why make this different for visual artists? Nonetheless, the artist resale right is not without its problems.
It began with the French when the owner of the painting put up Jean-Francois Millet’s “The Angelus” at auction. The seller benefited from the full profit while Millet’s family struggled in poverty. After World War I, this was the case for many families or widows of artists killed during the war. In the 1920s the droit de suite was created as a supplementary tax art dealers or highest bidders at art auctions had to pay as a percentage of the final price in addition to other commissions.
Since this time, most European Commission countries have adopted the artist resale right, the UK recently put this into legislation, and in the US it is only implemented by California with different clauses for every country depending on how much the work was sold for, the percentage of royalties, the nationality of the artist, where geographically the sale took place, where the seller resides, and whether the artist took the initiative to track the artwork’s resale. It depends on many factors and in the UK a resale cannot exceed 12,500 euro no matter how high the resale price and doesn’t apply if the artwork is to be bought by a museum or a non-profit.
There are some concerns as to why countries have been reluctant to apply this right. It seems so apparent it should already exist for the sake of artists. First of all, there’s the risk of decreasing market competitiveness, the dealers and auction houses are afraid that by introducing the royalty it will decrease the possible prices obtained at the auction, decrease competition in the art markets, and also the primary sales of the artworks will also decrease. This is the fear and it makes sense.
If you’re an art seller and want the benefits from re-selling an artwork why would you put it in an auction in Paris or the UK if you don’t have to pay the royalty in the US? Also when buying an artwork initially you would try to get a discount since you know later on you have to pay a higher royalty. Overall this would work better if everyone complied or then the seller would really have to be an arts crusader and want some of the benefits to go back to the artist. However, it also supposedly puts the art market at a disadvantage for Europe and the UK compared to the US.
Doesn’t this sound familiar for other global initiatives? I’m thinking current position on the environment and the Kyoto Protocol, the International Criminal Court and human rights…where is the US on this one? In any case we all know how binding and enforcing those United Nations conventions actually are, and even for this one UNESCO has composed a treaty with country signatures trying to enforce this right.
Other arguments against include that this benefits the wrong artists, meaning the ones that are already established and stars (but what’s wrong with that?) This is a difficult law to enforce since the artist would literally have to track down the resale of a work of art, and this proves difficult when there isn’t much transparency in the art world.
However, maybe we will see an emergence of new small businesses operating as representatives of the artist’s rights where their primary job would be to track down resales to attribute the royalties appropriately.

Origins of the Costume Party A costume party takes its origins from the masquerade balls which started during the 15 century in Europe. They were held for varied reasons and usually started off with the endless procession of guests making their entrance and properly presented to the gathering. There was always a reason to celebrate and to hold festivities especially in Venice as it became associated with the holding of their Venetian Carnival tradition. The holding of a masquerade ball in Venice died down along with the fall of the Venetian Republic.
Nevertheless, masquerade balls remained popular in other European countries throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. They took to masquerading more seriously hence, the masquerade ball slowly transformed into a costume party as guests made more efforts to be unrecognizable. This was inspired by games held during the celebration, as guests tried to guess the identity behind the costume and the mask.
However, this also led to the occurrence of murders during masquerade balls, where assassins took advantage of their hidden identities. The most popular and celebrated at that time was the death of King Gustav III of Sweden. Soon enough, novelists like Edgar Allan Poe, found the masquerade balls as good material for his short stories. The behavior and the colorful stories that emanated from these festivities made it interesting enough to inspire, literary settings, plays, operas and short stories.
It came to a point when certain groups of people formed an alliance to wage war against the holding of masquerade balls. They implored upon authorities to take certain measure against the holding of this traditional masquerade balls. It was fast becoming a great contributor to immorality in the society. This then signaled the waning desire to be a part of the revelries in the olden day style of a costume party.

Which makes me wonder if it is just now popular in the “urban” setting or I am just now coming around to it. Ten years ago old labels like Christian Dior were popular after Gucci and Prada had their run but you never heard anything about Yves Saint Laurent. Is it just me or do these labels put out a lot of women’s clothing and one or two extremely difficult to find pieces for men to enjoy?
I can’t wear anything these labels put out. But when I do see something it just seems so obvious, like “of course” why wouldn’t anyone else do that? Designer polos are really hot this year. But how many of us can afford a 0 polo? I need a 2x, I think Gucci makes polo shirts that size. I do not want to wear the same 5 Ralph Lauren Polo shirts I used to wear in college I need something completely different. Everyone wore those polo shirts back in the nineties there has to be something different out there.

The Gucci Group also has other labels such as Balenciaga and Botega Venetta and owns half of Alexander McQueen and half of Stella McCartney. If anything such an existence is a reminder of how the “suits” or corporations have taken over fashion and that looks that do not sell or are not practical will never come out of such fashion lines.
So perhaps if I see an artist wearing YSL I should just accept that this is just another product from the “machine” of fashion. Yves Saint Laurent does not have a name that rolls off of the tongue as easily as Gucci or Prada does, but it is being promoted just the same. The real question is whether people will buy the stuff with the huge “YSL” logos to let everyone know what they are wearing, or if they are going to get the “real stuff”. Clearly the days of huge logos and flaunting your wealth should be behind us, but when I see those “YSL” logos it feels like the nineties all over again. Just give me a clean look and something for me to aspire towards and you can keep the details about which labels you are wearing all to yourself.

Jack Ryan (born October 6, 1959) is a Republican from the state of Illinois who was forced to withdraw from the 2004 United States Senate race due to an alleged sex scandal involving his relationship with his ex-wife, actress Jeri Ryan. Deborah Jeane Palfrey (March 18, 1956 – May 1, 2008) (dubbed the D.C. Madam by the news media) operated Pamela Martin and Associates, an escort agency in Washington, D.C. Although she argued that the company’s services were legal, she was convicted on April 15, 2008 of racketeering, using the mail for illegal purposes, and money laundering.
Slightly over two weeks later, facing a prison sentence of five or six years, she was found hanged. Autopsy results and the final police investigative report concluded that her death was a suicide. n October 2006, United States Postal Inspection Service agents posed as a couple who were interested in buying Palfrey’s home as a means of accessing her property without a warrant. On March 10, 2008, The New York Times reported that Spitzer had previously patronized a high-priced prostitution service called Emperors Club VIP and met for over two hours with a ,000-an-hour call girl going by the name Ashley Alexandra Dupré (legal name Ashley Rae Maika DiPietro, born Ashley Youmans). This information originally came to the attention of authorities from a federal wiretap.
Spitzer had at least seven or eight liaisons with women from the agency over six months, and paid more than ,000. According to published reports, investigators believe Spitzer paid up to ,000 for prostitutes over a period of several years while he was Attorney General, and later as Governor. Spitzer first drew the attention of federal investigators when his bank reported suspicious money transfers, which initially led investigators to believe that Spitzer may have been hiding bribe proceeds.

McGreevey was criticized for appointing as homeland security adviser Golan Cipel, because he lacked experience or other qualifications for the position. In addition, Cipel could not gain a security approval from the Federal government, as he was Israeli and not a U.S. citizen. McGreevey had met him in Israel during a trip there in 2000.
According to McGreevey in The Confession, The Record was the first newspaper to break the news of a relationship between McGreevey and Cipel. McGreevey brought up Cipel’s name six weeks into his administration in a February 14, 2002, interview with The Record’s editorial board at its offices saying: “We will not skimp on security. We actually brought on a security adviser from the Israel Defense Forces, probably the best in the world.”
The interview prompted news investigation into Cipel’s background. On February 21, The Record published a profile of Cipel, calling him a “sailor” and a “poet.” The article stated,“Democrats close to the administration say McGreevey and Cipel have struck up a close friendship and frequently travel together”, prompting McGreevey’s own mother to confront him about his sexual orientation. Various media organizations sent reporters to Israel to ask questions about Cipel and his background. Jessica Louise Cutler (born May 18, 1978, in Monterey, California) is a blogger, an author, and former congressional staff assistant who was fired for detailing her active sexual life, including receiving money for having sex, in her blog. James Dale Guckert (born December 1, 1957) is a conservative columnist better known by the pseudonym Jeff Gannon. Between 2003 and 2005, he was given credentials as a White House reporter. During the resulting interview with the arresting officer, Craig insisted upon his innocence, disputing the officer’s version of the event by stating that he merely had a “wide stance” and that he had been picking a piece of paper from the floor. In spite of his claims of innocence during the interview, Craig later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct by signing and mailing a plea petition, dated August 1, 2007, to the Hennepin County District Court in Minnesota.
He paid 5, including fines and fees. Senator Craig signed the petition to enter his guilty plea, which contained the provisions, “I understand that the court will not accept a plea of guilty from anyone who claims to be innocent… I now make no claim that I am innocent of the charge to which I am entering a plea of guilty.” Craig mailed his signed petition to the court, and his petition to plead guilty to the misdemeanor charge was accepted and filed by the court on August 8, 2007. Craig later indicated that he regretted filing the guilty plea, stating “In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. In May 2001, Condit became the subject of national news coverage after the May 1 disappearance of Chandra Levy, a young woman working as a Washington, D.C. intern originally from Condit’s district. Police questioned him twice, and Condit denied having an affair with her; however, after Levy’s aunt went public with conversations she had had with her missing niece about the adulterous liaison, police questioned him a third time, and Condit confessed to the relationship. When the affair began, Condit was 53 and Levy was 23.
While Condit was not named as an official suspect in the disappearance, Levy’s family (and subsequently the national media) suspected that Condit was withholding important information about the intern’s disappearance. Public interest was very high, and Condit’s reputation suffered not just from the contrast between his “pro-family” politics versus his adultery with a woman two years younger than his daughter, and his attempts to mislead the police, but in particular, from an incident in July, two months after Levy vanished, in which Condit was caught trying to hide a gift box in a dumpster in one of Washington’s Virginia suburbs.
Levy’s remains did not turn up during the extensive search that followed her disappearance, but were discovered by accident on May 22, 2002, by a man hunting for turtles with his dog in a secluded area of Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. That month, a medical examiner officially declared that Levy’s death was the result of homicide. In March 2009, police issued a warrant for the arrest of Ingmar Guandique for the murder of Chandra Levy. In the case of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the “FDLE conducted as thorough and comprehensive investigation as possible considering Congress and Mr. Foley denied us access to critical data,” said FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey with the closure of the case.
