Her “unmentionables”, in fact, have much to say about her inner life and emotional state of mind. Soft, smooth, and delicate fabrics suggest that she is very feminine. While boyshorts may indicate that she is sporty and playful with a hint of aggression.

The idea that a woman’s underwear and lingerie reflects her personality is not new. There have been occasional magazine articles, quizzes, blogs, websites, etc. that have asked readers to identify their “panty personality”. Pantyology is an informal school of thought that focuses on consolidated and articulated these various ideas and concepts concerning the underlying psychology behind female undergarments. While sounding cheeky and humorous, it is the serious attempt to uncover a woman’s authentic personality.

It’s an interesting concept. I also think it will promote women to be more self-aware and empowered as consumers. It will also put the clothing companies on notice. As women become more in touch with their personal sense of self and style, they will not be easily persuaded by trends, and the fashion companies themselves will be forced to listen to their consumers rather than simply mass produce merchandise and sell poor quality garments at expensive prices. Maybe it will also encourage more local production and less globalization and outsourcing. After all, if you’re an American, wouldn’t you feel more represented in a pair of panties made in the USA? But then again, maybe there is an appeal to escape into the exotic with something imported. I’m not sure what the answer is, maybe it’s all psych—I mean panty-ology.

Victoria’s Secret certainly has a wonderful history, it all started when a graduate student from Stanford Graduate School Of Business felt rather embarassed when it came to purchasing beautiful lingerie from a department store. His name was Roy Raymond who was located in San Francisco, California. In 1977 Roy decided to open his first store at Stanford Shopping Center , thus Victoria’s Secret was born. Soon to follow was a mail-order catalog and three other Victoria’s Secret stores. The stores were created to make a man comfortable when purchasing women’s lingerie, the decor of the stores were Victorian desinged with wood panel walls and friendly staff. Instead of bras and panties being hung on a sterile rack, they were paired together in all sizes and mounted on frames. In July 2007 the retail chain Limited Brands sold 75% of there retail chain to Sun Capitol Partners so that they could focus on the growth of the Victoria’s Secret retail chain and Bath and Body works. In the past she focused on sit ups as the key exercise to reduce belly fat. She has since changed to exercises with big compound movement. Then she ended her session with 10 minutes of abs toning exercises. These exercises help to burn calories even after the gym workout.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, she would spent 40 minutes working out in gym. This gave her body time to recover from the training session.

In the gym, she did a lot of circuit training with only 30 seconds rest interval.

She repeated each exercise 10 times, before moving to the next. That’s part of her secret to reduce belly fat. Here’s the detail:

Warm up exercises (5 minutes):

2 minutes on stationary bike
Mountain climbers or mountain jumpers
Straight leg bridge with double leg curl on stability ball
Reverse back/hip extensions on stability ball
Break dancers

3 rounds of circuit training with free weight (20 minutes):

Dumbbell squat and presses
Lat pull downs
Dumbbell reverse lunges
Dumbbell bench presses
Dumbbell step ups

Fats burning exercises to reduce belly fat (10 minutes):

Lying leg thrusts
Bench crunches
Reverse crunches
Alternating crunches
3 minutes on abdominal vacuums

Finally 5 minutes of warm down following the same warm up exercises.

After my last law school exam for the year I was in need of some serious shop therapy.  I wanted to avoid crowds, or even worse, tumbleweeds blowing down the aisles of my favorite stores.  Shopping online seemed to provide the perfect solution for me to do my part to support the economy and brighten my day.

On May 1st, 2009, I placed web orders from four different stores: Victoria’s Secret, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Hanes, and Old Navy.  I was not optimistic.  Positive that my purchases would take entirely too long to arrive and then be wrong when it did get here, I sat back and monitored the status of my selections everyday on the internet.

Victoria’s Secret’s website was easy to use.  My favorite feature is the ability to search for items by specific sizes.  There is nothing more depressing than finding the cutest bra and it not be available in your size.  If you are unsure of your size, the site provides a feature that explains how to measure yourself.  The website also describes the best way to care for your bras.  Once I placed my order, however, I had trouble checking the status because I could never locate my “Customer Number” as required.  Victoria’s Secret was, however, the first order to arrive.  The package arrived undamaged on May 5th.  The order was complete, nothing being shipped separately.  Apparently, Victoria’s largest secret is that they provide excellent web service.

The orders from Dick’s Sporting Goods, Hanes and Old Navy all arrived May 6th, 2009.  Meaning, I had all of my items 5 days after my initial order.  Seeking an entertaining outdoor method of dropping some weight, I selected rollerblades for both my husband and I from Dick’s Sporting Goods.  Since I was unsure whether rollerblades would be classified as “footwear”, I used the search feature on the website to look only for rollerblades.  Dick’s Sporting Goods’s website posts user reviews for some of their products.  The site also provided hints on sizing the rollerblades since they do not precisely match shoe sizes.  The rollerblades arrived in pristine condition, even if I managed to fall on my face and scratch them within 7 minutes of putting them on.

Hanes has a very simple, easily navigable website.  Product selections are much wider than what you will find in stores.  I went to the site intending to purchase undergarments for both my husband and myself, plus work socks and t-shirts for my husband.  Allowing shoppers to compare different Hanes items makes it easy to know that you are getting exactly what you want for the best price.  Unfortunately, I could not find Hanes bras in my size, but suggestions on the site reminded me that I needed to replace some of my older sports bras.  Sports bras are plainly classified by the degree of activity the wearer intends to engage in.  My sole complaint is that the website referred to my order status as “in process” every day, including the day it arrived.  Most pleasing, my order arrived exactly as I requested.

Last, but certainly not least is Old Navy.  I have been a fan of Old Navy for several years, but was concerned that the economic downturn and resulting layoffs would damage our longstanding relationship with long delivery times and incorrect orders.  I ordered a pair of stack flip-flops, two pairs of pants, and three tops.  The prices were still as low as ever and the website provides shoppers with great features like being able to zoom in on parts of the garments for detail or change the color just by rolling over the palette.  You can look at products divided by type of clothing.  Or, if you are like me, you want to avoid the possibility of falling in love with clothing not in your size, you can avoid the heartache and search for clothes in your size alone.  Again, everything I ordered arrived in one shipment in the sizes and colors I had requested on the 5th day after my order.

My shopping experience left me with hope.  These large companies, suffering like every other from a beleaguered economy and increased fuel costs are still providing an excellent shopping experience.  I did not have to speak with any customer service representatives regarding delays, returns, or order cancellations.  The purchases were smooth and delivered with haste.  I will order from these companies again without hesitation and recommend that you do the same.

The Housewives of New York City is a reality television show on Bravo TV.  This show is one of a quartet of shows about “real housewives” in different locales:  NYC, Orange County, CA, Atlanta, GA, and the now premiering NEW Jersey.  These shows have all sky-rocketed in popularity, and the amount of interest and discussion concerning these ladies in the online community is amazing.  Maybe it is a form of escape in an economy that is currently dismal.  It seems women love watching the antics of the rich and privileged.  We may be wondering how to fix dinner with a pound of hamburger and some left-over rice, but ……  A girl has to dream, OK?  It seems the most talked-about of these fantasy-reality show is The Housewives of New York City.  Most people are now familiar with the show, even if they don’t watch it.  I will give you a brief run-down to help you understand the characters and plots as we  near the end of the second season.

Let’s start with the most dominant personality.  Each show has one….In the Housewives of New York City, it is JILL ZARIN.  Of everyone on the show, to my Southern ears, she has the most NEW York accent.  She reminds me a little of Barbra Streisand in mannerisms.  She is a typical Jewish New York Socialite.  Her also typical Jewish Mother, Gloria, has been featured frequently in the show, and has her own following!  She is one of those Jewish Mothers who just sweeps everyone under her wings.  Jill refers to her mother as Gloria.

Jill seems to be the Sun in the NYC housewives solar system.  She is quite socially involved, and entertains quite a lot.  She is married to Bobby Zarin, owner of Zarin Fabrics in New York.  By all appearances, he must be quite successful, as Jill is gifted with ,000 purses, ,000 designer gowns, and a new Mercedes SUV.  Jill has a teenage daughter, Alli, from a previous marriage. She is featured regularly on the show, and has her own website and fans.  She is a beautiful young lady who shows much grace and poise for a girl her age.   Bobby also has a family from a former marriage, who were mentioned in the reunion show because one of his grown children was very sick.   Almost all Bravo reality shows have reunion specials at the end of the show, after all episodes have been shown.  I think the reunion specials are live, so they are filmed much later.  They discuss the season,
having all now seen the comments the other castmates made onscreen about them in interviews.Bobby and Jill Zarin seem to be happily married; they live in an upscale, recently redecorated apartment in an affluent New York City area.  Jill works at Zarin Fabrics; the store and their decorator, Brad, is featured quite a lot.  Jill refers to Brad as her gay husband. He is almost part of their family.  The Zarin’s have an estate in the Hamptons, where part of the season was filmed.  The New York City  social scene moves to the Hamptons in the summer. Jill is quite close with Bethenny Frankel, kind of like a mentor.  She is constantly competing or locking horns with Ramona Singer, or “Ramoner” as Jill calls her.  Much of the show involves the entertaining that the Zarins do.  Bobby is quiet, but distinguished. He seems to enjoy just going along with what Jill plans and mingling into the background.  He is a classy man. He seems to really genuinely love Jill. He seems like a peaceful person to be around.

NOW, to my favorite character on The Housewives of New York City, Bethenny Frankel. Bethenny is one of the absolutely funniest people on Television!  Her wisecracks and impersonations are absolutely what adds the flavor to this show; without Bethenny it would probably just be like the other housewife shows on Bravo.  Bethenny is the one person who basically floats between everyone and pretty much gets along with everyone….,that is almost everyone until this season.  Season two has focused very much on the  friction between Bethenny and the new Housewife, Kelly Bensimon. Bethenny is single and has no children.  First season, she was shown in a serious relationship with a nice guy, Jason who had three children.  The relationship ended. Bethenny is the most stunningly attractive of the Housewives of New York City (this season featured a photo shoot with a magazine.)  So, it’s puzzling  when they start harping like a Mother wanting grandkids, “What’s the Matter With Bethenny?”  Bethenny has just not found Mr. Right yet. Bethenny has a blossoming career.  She is a celebrity chef, author, and purveyor of her own line of diet-oriented drinks and baked goods.  Except, never say “diet.”  Her whole “SKINNY GIRL” (name of her marguerite) philosophy is to liberate you from dieting to be “Naturally Thin”, which is the title of her new book rising on the New York Best Seller’s List. I guarantee you Bethenny will be your favorite housewife! 

Ramona Singer is the other firecracker character on the show; she is a sort of counterbalance to Jill.  She is a feisty blonde, who kind of comes across in a “ditzy” kind of way.  She is a business woman herself, wholesaling clothing, and starting a new skin care line. She has mused many times about women being financially independent.  She helps her husband, Mario,  in their fourth generation family business, True Faith Jewelry.  Mario is the “handsomest” man on the show, and has been featured more this season.  He has not come off well, as he has appeared to obsess about this tennis game he was arranging with Jill Zarin and a male partner.  He is a ranking tennis player and it just seemed silly.   The Singers have one child, a young teenage daughter, Avery.  She is very conscientious and serious-minded, and often scolds her mom for inappropriate behavior.  She has not been featured as much in the second season.  The charm of Ramona, who I think is MUCH smarter than she is presented here, is that she says what she thinks straight up to your face.  You do not have to wonder what Ramona thinks….she tells you, but  not in a way to hurt someone on purpose.  She is just very transparent, and she “wears her feelings on her sleeve, ” as the saying goes.  Ramona does not suffer Alex and Simon well.  Besides their apartment in the city, they have a very beautiful estate in The Hamptons with a pool. 

Countess Luann de Lesseps…..Please do NOT omit the “Countess” part!  Luann is married to the Count Alexandre de Lesseps, whose family gave the United States the Statue of Liberty and was involved in the building of the Suez Canal.  They have a preteen son, Noel, and a teenage daughter, Victoria, who just started at boarding school.  Noel and Victoria are lovingly cared for much of the time by their Philipino Housekeeper, Rosie.  Everyone loves ROSIE.  Rosie took a vacation to visit family and came back with a new look.  She was really transformed into a new and glamorous Rosie.  The family has an  apartment in New York City and owns a home in the Hamptons.  The family has been based in New York, with Alex traveling the world on business. Luann thoroughly feels her title and importance, yet was raised as an American Indianof the Algonquin tribe, in a large Connecticut family. She reminded the pizza delivery people of her title when she ordered a large pepperoni,  (for the kids when she was going out and Rosie was on vacation).  She reminded Bethenny to introduce her to the chauffeur as Countess, and walks around calling people, “LOVE.” This season she was dispensing dating advice to Bethenny and sharing her fairy tale romance story to the girls at the “Girl’s Club,” She is currently writing a book on etiquette called, “Class with the Countess.”   But, recently, before Season Two ended, the news broke that Luann and the Count are separated.  He was not shown very much this season like he was last season, but the divorce was not mentioned in the filming.  Despite her portrayal as a high hat on the show, she seems like a nice person, contributing much of her time to charities.  The general attitude you pick up is that people do feel sorry for her, as the press has hinted that she was treated in a shabby way, with an email “Dear John.”
There is speculation about whether she will be featured on the show next year and how the divorce will be presented.  Also, the big question….will she still be a Countess?  I hope so.  Stay tuned!

And the new housewife this season is Kelly Killoren Bensimon.  She is a former model and ex-wife to Gilles Bensimon, the famous fashion photographer.  She has very many careers. She has written three books, most notably “The Bikini Book,” and writes for magazines covering fashion and society in New York. She has a jewelry line, still models and represents companies, is a prolific horse woman,  and is raising two girls from her marriage to Bensimon.  She lives in an apartment in what New Yorkers call “downtown” and has a life-sized ceramic horse in her living room.  She has acted at times in ways that seem unusual, with last week’s episode showing her running down the middle of the street in traffic.  Everyone has made fun of that, even on network television shows.  And judging by the discussions and comments on websites, she has not won over too many fans.  She made the mistake of trying to upbraid Bethenny by meeting with her to tell her that “they were not friends.”  Don’t mess with Bethenny…the fans LOVE Bethenny. But, besides her kind of eccentric personality, she is presented on the show as feeling like she has “this wonderful life and is so wonderful and does wonderful things with her wonderful friends.”  She constantly reminds everyone how “private” a person she is…that is on a reality show she tells us this!  She is a beautiful woman who dresses most of the time like she is a contemporary of her daughters.  She wore these pink rubber rain boots to her face-off with Bethenny that have brought a lot of negative attention her way.  On retrospect, she could have done that on purpose, I don’t know.  If you focus on the preplanning of a reality show, whether it is The Hills or Project Runway, it ruins it for you.  We like to think she got up that day and said, “Wow, these Pink rubber boots look chic!”  As a side note, Kelly had some bad press over charges filed against her by a young man ii New York.  He claimed she was his girlfriend and assaulted him.  (Kelly is around 6 feet tall!)  Supposedly, he was in battered condition and went into the police station to file the charges.  When the issue came to court, he didn’t show up and the charges were dropped.  Kelly adds interest to the show, and she would be a fun friend to hang around with.  She seems like a good mother, too, but she seems like she doesn’t realize her age  or at least doesn’t act her age.  Maybe that is good? I hope Kelly returns next season.

Alex Mccord is part of the husband-wife team referred to online in blogs and discussions as “Silex.”  Much of season one drama centered around the unusually close relationship of Alex McCord and her husband Simon. Most social events on the show would film The Housewives of New York City and Simon! Ramona greatly resented his intrusion into girls night out.    There has been much drama between Simon and Ramona. Some of it involved some nude pictures of Alex that surfaced last year.   Simon is a Hotel Executive and Alex is a graphic designer.  They have two little boys Johanne and Francois. They come across on the show as quite pretentious.  They are shown frequently shopping for expensive fashion, and then searching the paper for pictures of themselves.  They talk openly about making “connections” with important people at the Opera and other places they go.  They talk like they have such mega-intelligent childen and are quick to tell everyone that they have a French-speaking au pair. This au pair does not appear on the show. They just seem to brag a lot.   They live in Cobblestone section of Brooklyn in what appears as a ramshackle house in contrast to the plush digs of the others. Last season, it was surprising to everyone when they were shown to live in a house that was a “work in progress” and had been for a couple of years.  Part of the floors in their foyer were just plywood!  They said something about doing the work themselves and not having had time since their last child was born.   This season, after much ado about the condition of their home, they have begun a major renovation.  They must have decided not to do the work themselves, but they keep talking about how one should live in a house a few years to get a feel for where you want the rooms to be before remodeling.  DESPITE their pretentious attitude, Silex love each other and their children.  Although, sometimes they do and say things that just kill me!, I think it is refreshing for television to show a couple who are best friends and love each other completely.  But, most of the time, especially last season, they really were portrayed as social climbers. Recent news reports online have reported Alex was laid off from her job at Victoria’s Secret.  She writes in her blog that she has been getting resumes together, etc…and spending time with her boys.

  If you have missed the second season, they show it quite a lot on Bravo Television.  They run marathons of their shows so you can catch up and get hooked!    There are countless websites where you can get the latest on the Housewives of New York City.
