Tracing The Origins Of Costume Party rom the Masquerade Balls of Olden Times

July 31st, 2011

Origins of the Costume Party
A costume party takes its origins from the masquerade balls which started during the 15 century in Europe. They were held for varied reasons and usually started off with the endless procession of guests making their entrance and properly presented to the gathering. There was always a reason to celebrate and to hold festivities especially in Venice as it became associated with the holding of their Venetian Carnival tradition. The holding of a masquerade ball in Venice died down along with the fall of the Venetian Republic.

Nevertheless, masquerade balls remained popular in other European countries throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. They took to masquerading more seriously hence, the masquerade ball slowly transformed into a costume party as guests made more efforts to be unrecognizable. This was inspired by games held during the celebration, as guests tried to guess the identity behind the costume and the mask.

However, this also led to the occurrence of murders during masquerade balls, where assassins took advantage of their hidden identities. The most popular and celebrated at that time was the death of King Gustav III of Sweden. Soon enough, novelists like Edgar Allan Poe, found the masquerade balls as good material for his short stories. The behavior and the colorful stories that emanated from these festivities made it interesting enough to inspire, literary settings, plays, operas and short stories.

It came to a point when certain groups of people formed an alliance to wage war against the holding of masquerade balls. They implored upon authorities to take certain measure against the holding of this traditional masquerade balls. It was fast becoming a great contributor to immorality in the society. This then signaled the waning desire to be a part of the revelries in the olden day style of a costume party.

Present Day Costume Party
In the U.S. today, a costume party is associated with the annual Halloween’s Eve celebration. The young generation had their fun trick or treating while the older ones including the teenagers had their fun via the holding of a costume party. Halloween’s Eve celebrations became the favorite for movie settings in horror thrillers.

Hollywood also celebrates by way of costume party for their movie openings or book launchings especially if the movie or book is of a science fiction theme or fantasy setting. In New Orleans, costume party events are still popular in celebration of carnivals like the Mardi Gras. These are also celebrated in the same manner by the Caribbean nations.

In the UK, costume parties remain popular all year round and are called by the Britons as a fancy dress party. The British Royal Family is said to be the number one celebrants of the fancy dress party or costume party even to this date. In fact, they still receive much criticisms from the public as the members of the Royal family are still placed under great scrutiny.

As Adults, letting the child in us come out at Halloween and dressing up for fun is exciting, but looking at the excitement and thrill your child will receive from the novelty of a great costume is priceless.

What Types Of Costumes?

What Do You Do?

Finding these costumes has been made much easier over the years because of the huge popularity of buying online, and usually there is a fantastic selection of sizes to fit all children from any age.

Important facts to take in to account when you buy any costume for your child of any age, it will more than likely get spoiled or ruined, either spewed on, full of candy or torn, who knows, they are children after all and that’s what happens, so when buying a costume take note of the type of material it is and the cleaning instructions whether it is machine wash or hand wash etc. Because you have spent money and will want to use it again and again, it is important to find how to clean it properly.

Also be-careful that the costume is not too hot or cold and that it is fitting and comfortable. Make sure, it is easy to open in-case of needing to change a baby. Again, check the fabric used to make the costume before you buy it, taking in to account the amount of time the child will be in the costume, the time of day (bright costumes at night would be better for a child) and how many times you will use this costume hence the amount of money you invest in it.

So be sure to have your camera ready for them “what did you do to me as a child” moments and have a great Halloween.

How Darth Vader Costume Evolved

July 27th, 2011

There has been a lot of mystery surrounding who was the actor beneath the memorable Darth Vader costume. In fact there was more than one person involved in making the Darth Vader costume very realistic.

The answer to the first query is David Prowse.  He was the one who wore the Darth Vader costume for the majority of the movie. He was chosen for the role because of his huge stature and medium size built. He was actually asked to make a choice between being Chewbacca or the dark ruler himself.

He said in an interview that he chose the Darth Vader role because he thought that by playing the role “people would remember him”. It was a very good decision as people really do remember Darth Vader. On record, Darth Vader was ranked third in the list of the top 100 villains in the American Film Institute’s top 100 heroes and villain’s awards.

The next person who gave the Darth Vader costume its creepy mechanical voice was James Earl Jones. Of course he did it with a little sound effect editing. Still, his voice gave that signature evil and powerful quality. The reason why David Prose did not get to voice his acting behind the Darth Vader costume, was because he had too much of a West Country accent.

Next on the list is the face behind the mask. Darth Vader was finally unmasked by his own son before he died. It was Sebastian Shaw who gave the feeble and dying look of the powerful person under the mask of the Darth Vader costume. Though he was given little credit for it, he was still recognized.

As for the fight scenes, some of them needed stunt doubles in the original Start Wars trilogy. It was only later recognized that it was not David Prose who was doing all the light saber battle choreography while in the Darth Vader costume.  It was performed by Bob Anderson. He was only recognized later by Mark Hamill who played as Luke Skywalker in the film. He said that he could not keep it a secret anymore as Bob needed recognition for all the hard work he put into those fight scenes.
Anderson was a fencing instructor.  This was the main reason he was very good in sword fights.

Lastly, in the latest Chapter of the movie, where it explained how Darth Vader came to be, the role was played by Hayden Christensen. Though he only wore the Darth Vader costume in the last part of the last movie, he was still the one who gave life to Darth Vader’s true identity before he became a cyborg.

For a villain to be known in almost any part of the world, it is only fitting to give credit to those who made it possible to bring the Darth Vader costume into an almost sense of realism.

There Are Halloween Costume Ideas For A Big Plus-Sized Guy

July 26th, 2011

Halloween is here, but you still don’t have a costume to wear for the annual costume party. You can’t seem to choose which of the many ideas for Halloween costume to settle on because of your big plus-size. It makes you feel awkward wearing a Captain Jack Sparrow or even just a cowboy outfit.

There are hosts of ideas for Halloween costume but you feel that only a few of them suits you. Here are some examples of how to choose your costume from among the many ideas for Halloween costume available in the net.

If you’re a guy and you’re on the heavy side and you have no hang-ups about your big size, then choose ideas for Halloween costume among characters recognized for being big. You can be Shrek, Incredible Hulk, Fred Flintstone or Patty McPhatty. You might like to choose Patty McPhatty the obese character from the Austin Powers movie also known as Fat Bastard. He looks cool, unique and a lot of adults will have a fun time remembering his character in the movie. This is one of the ideas for Halloween costume, which can also serve as a good conversation piece at the party.

Patty McPhatty’s costume consists of a padded suit with reinforced body padding to make the wearer bigger than his actual size. There’s a navy jacket, a Scottish hat and a pair of large boot covers similar to those worn by the Scottish herdsmen. Grow a little beard fashioned after Fat Bastard’s and then use makeup to thicken your eyebrows a little.

Other ideas for Halloween costumes are lifted from story book characters. If you want to be a bit fiendish but in a wholesome kind of way, you can be the Big Bad Wolf from the Little Red Riding Hood story. This will work great in case you have a female partner who is also trying to make up her mind as to which ideas for Halloween costume to wear. Your partner can be Little Red Riding Hood and the two of you will be perfect under the couple’s category too.

The Big Bad Wolf costume comes in grey fur bodysuit complete with a furry tail and authentic looking wolf paws. The paws are awesome because of the vinyl fingernails and claws with furs that cover your entire hands. It also has a boot top accessory which you can wear along with any lumberjack outfit like a pair of plaid shirt and dungarees. Better yet, wear your granny’s long night gown and a cloth cap to emphasize the pair of fake big ears that forms part of the wolf mask.

These are just some of the ideas for Halloween costumes you can choose from in online costume stores. Just because you’re overweight and all, doesn’t mean the choices are limited to only those who come in regular sizes.

The Wizard of Oz captured six Oscar nominations: Best Picture, Best Special Effects, Best Original Music Score (won), Best Original Song (“Over the Rainbow,” won), Best Color Cinematography, Best Art Direction.

80′s Movie Review: Midnight Hour

July 15th, 2011

The Midnight Hour was released for a made for TV in 1985. I was 5 years old however when I first saw it. Let me tell you, it scared the ebbie jeebies out of me.

Now the review before me says that it’s okay to show this flick to the little ones. I would say go ahead and let them watch it, that’s if you want them up all night, imagining some huge werewolf ripping at them under the covers, and end up sleeping in your room. In my opinion this movie is a bit too scary for some younger children.

Lets get to the movie itself though.
This movie is my all time favorite horror. There doesn’t go a year that my family doesn’t gather to watch this on Halloween.

Bill is the main character, he is your average nerdy type teenager, with a small group of friends. He has a group of 4 friends total; all whom need a costume for Melissa’s Halloween party.

They decide that its a good idea to go and borrow some clothes/costumes, from a local wax museum for authentic costumes.
2 of the teens have ancestors in the museum, as wax figures. So naturally they decide to wear there ancestors original clothes.

They stumble upon a trunk hidden in the corner of the basement. They open the trunk, and realize there are some cool props inside for them to use for the Halloween party. Bill urges them not to take anything, but he’s a one man army up against the rest of the group.

For some odd reason one of the teens thinks it would be a cool night to go to the local graveyard and hang out with everyone.

They end up opening the trunk here completely. Inside is a scroll, sealed shut with wax stamp.
Melissa grabs the scroll, opens it up and begins reading it, as she sways back and forth, in a trance like state.

She faints, only to get up saying, “It was only a joke”.
They leave quickly afterwards, seeing how no one saw the humor and head for home.

There is then a small cut in the scene, and you now get to see the graveyard beginning to, what looks like; breathe. Dirt goes flying up, you get to see some ripping at the wood inside their coffins, to get out. Some zombies rise up in anger, others just seem to roam aimlessly.

This is the best visual I think I’ve ever seen in any rising dead horror movie. The make-up and costumes are perfect, the mood of the movie is always up to par, and the music will take you right back to the big 80′s.

Oddly however, a werewolf is somehow mixed in, as well as Melissa’s ancestor; the witch, who comes back as a vampire. Which is strange. Theres even a little midget thrown in. I think he was the coolest little zombie, and his costume and make-up were spectacular. Some ghouls, and a lot of semi slow moving zombies. It’s an awesome scene. One must see the movie to fully appreciate it.

Also in the zombie mix arises a 1950′s cheerleader still in uniform. Shes the only one that seems like she doesn’t belong in the group of half rotten zombies.

The teens are completely unaware of it at first. Till Melissa’s Halloween party. This is where the ghouls were able to blend in perfectly in the crowd. As each teen at the party is bitten, they turn into a zombie themselves. Not cute zombies either. I mean full fledged scary running zombies.

Bill meets up with Sandy on the street, he left the party early. So he was one of the lucky ones who got spared. She asks him for directions to the malt shop. It seems she is not aware shes dead, and she is talking about shops, and places that once existed when she was alive in the 50′s.

A small romance is shared between the two, up until they realize they have to save the town from the ghoulies.

This is where the movie turns from semi-scary, to full blown horror fest.
They have to get the ring off of a dead ancestors finger in the graveyard to seal the scroll before midnight.

This tasks proves not so easy, seeing how they have an entire mob of undead chasing them. All of whom were once Bills friends. The chase is probably the scariest part in the movie.

The ending is full of suspense, and will have you actually anticipating the result. I’m telling you the ending is frightening, but I will not ruin it.

I would recommend this movie to families with children no younger than 6. A definite watch for Halloween or All Halo’s Eve.

Its just a great 80′s horror film that’s owed a lot of due credit. I wish they’d play it on TV every year, however they do not. You can buy it on DVD for , that’s if you can find it. The DVD is no longer being made. Another reason I’m glad my mom taped it, when it was shown in the 80′s.
